French & Jupps selection of patent roasted malts help unlock the full potential to craft exceptional beers used by champion brewers over centuries. Browse our full selection of Patent Roasted Malts.
Roasted patent malts play a pivotal role in crafting some of the most beloved dark beer styles with their higher colour specifications and robust flavours, expect prominent roast and smoky flavours including roast coffee, dark chocolate, peated whisky to nuts and marzipan and delicate biscuity notes.
While exceptional in darker styles, Patent Roasted Malts offer surprising versatility. Experiment with incorporating them into: Amber Ales, IPAs balancing their intense hoppy character in West Coast styles and Bocks for colour.
Patent Malts derive their name from the 19th century when a special license or “patent” was required to sell them. Unlike traditional pale malts, Patent Malts undergo a higher roasting temperature, resulting in a deeper colour and a more pronounced roast character without the astringency often associated with heavily roasted barley. This innovation, patented by Daniel Wheeler in 1886 (hence the name “patent malt”), transformed the brewing landscape, paving the way for the beer styles we know and love today.
