A legacy of innovation: A brief history of patent malt

Patent Malts derive their name from the 19th century when a special license or “patent” was required to sell them. Unlike traditional pale malts, Patent Malts undergo a higher roasting temperature, resulting in a deeper colour and a more pronounced roast character without the astringency often associated with heavily roasted barley. This innovation, patented by Daniel Wheeler in 1886 (hence the name “patent malt”), transformed the brewing landscape, paving the way for the beer styles we know and love today.
