It was in 1864 that our Chairman, David Jupp’s ancestor, William Jupp, bought the freehold to our malthouse at auction. The property, situated on either side of the River Lea in Stanstead Abbotts, Hertfordshire, was sold at the Saracen’s Head Inn on Ware High Street.
Today, French & Jupps proudly continue our centuries-old tradition of malting, a heritage that pre-dates our time in Stanstead Abbotts to 1689. This makes French & Jupps Great Britain’s oldest maltster.
It was last June that we first shared news of opening our doors to the public. Now, at the start of 2026, we are delighted to share that we continue the journey of sharing with our local community the story of our craft and heritage.
