Honouring 215 Years of Malting Transport Heritage on a Historic Narrow Boat F&J

For generations, French & Jupps roasted malt travelled the Thames and London's canals and waterways to reach the city's brewers. It's where the 'French' in French & Jupps originates from, our partnership with barge owner Margaret French back in the 1860s.

Malt, Transport, and the Pursuit of Heritage

Whilst this has now become a scarce occasion, today we’re recreating that historic journey. The River Lea, one of Hertfordshire’s critical canalised rivers, serves as our historical route from the French & Jupps location in Stanstead Abbotts to formally revisit London’s malting, brewing, and industrial past.

Watch as we load our roasted malt onto a historic narrow boat—operated by MJP Water Transport—and cruise down the River Lea, one of Hertfordshire’s most important canalised rivers, providing a powerful and tangible connection to our 215-year-old legacy.

From River Bank to Brewing Tank

With the journey completed, we wrapped up the journey with the brew day at East London Brewing Co. to produce a green hop ‘Harvest Porter’, celebrating our shared heritage of London’s brewing past.

The collaboration ‘Harvest Porter’ is scheduled for launch on October 9th at the Ye Olde Rose & Crown Walthamstow! Keep an eye out for for a taste of history not to be missed.
